[I first posted this early yesterday, but it didn't get through. Now
others have beaten me to it! I'll re-post it in its entirety, though.]
For UK members, there's a 40-minute programme on BBC4 (digital TV) this
coming Sunday night (30th) from 2145 - 2225. It's called 'The Lost Road
- Overland to Singapore', and is new interview material featuring
members of the original team, illustrated with some of BB's footage.
Interestingly (and inaccurately) the brief 'Radio Times' billing goes on
to suggest that it was Sir David Attenborough who did the journey! No,
he commissioned the filming, and encouraged the team, but was certainly
NOT involved. However, I believe he may have an input into the BBC4
programme.
Note that this is NOT my DVD version, which will be much longer, and
will be concentrating as much as possible on the Land-Rover aspects.
It's well under way, although the main thrust at present has been
re-mastering BB's original film, in which every edit was visible due to
the 'sticky tape' or 'glue' methods then used for joining 16mm film.
Electronically re-making 1002 edits took quite a time! It's also been a
mammoth task to transcribe Tim Slessor and BB's commentary on the film,
and also their interview - 25 A4 pages in all. I've got someone else
transcribing Nigel, Adrian and Pat. I'll be watching the BBC4 programme
with interest, though, to see how my efforts compare. I understand that
there may be a repeat on BBC2 before long.
Having re-mastered BB's footage, I've also prepared for him the inserts
that will be projected onto a screen when the reprint of Tim's book is
officially launched (by Sir David) at the Royal Geographical Society in
Kensington, London, on Friday November 25th. All 5 surviving members of
the Team will be involved in the presentation, which will be something
to experience. NOTE THAT FREE TICKETS FOR THIS ARE AVAILABLE - contact
me on overland@xxxxxxx.xx.xx and I'll pass your details on to BB.
I believe that the book MAY be available already - it's 'First Overland'
by Tim Slessor, published by Signal, ISBN 1-904955-14-2.
Any further news, I'll post it here.
Regards,
