In the Series 2 Workshop Manual it talks about Railko conversion kits but
only specifies drilling and inserting the pin on the spring loaded damper
type. There are no assembly instructions for the steering lever and Railko
pin. The only note on the Railko type system is that the resistance to
rotation should be 12 to 14 lbs. (where the resistance to rotation on the
spring and cone system should be 14 to 16 lbs.)

In neither the Series 2 Workshop Manual nor the 2 part Series 2/2a Workshop
Manual does it specify that the Railko bush should be pinned. Although in
the later Series 3 type Railko system the pin is a single part with the
bracket (remembering that the later Series 2a and 3 the steering arms are on
the bottom taper roller bearing side).

Given that steering damping is achieved by resistance between the pin and
the friction material in the Railko bush, ensuring that the pin does not
rotate in the steering lever is important. The only guaranty that the
Railko pin doesn't rotate is by drilling and pinning. However as the
resistance to rotation should only be a maximum of 14 lbs. this should be
achieved and exceeded significantly by the press fitting alone and I have
seen many Railko bushes fitted this way.

However as this is steering that we are talking about, I would be reluctant
to recommend anything other than what Jeremy has said.

I hope that assists you in your decision.

Cheers
Diana

Hi Mark,

I think most would be cautious to advise against pinning the new king pins
in.

The Land Rover is over-engineered; even so Rover was keen to save a buck
where it could in the 1950s. If these pins were dispensable in the design,
Rover would have omitted them.

Put them in - stay safe.

Jeremy
