Tom,
I haven't had the joy of worrying about cooking my engine just yet...
Spent Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights at my Uncle's house starting
to rebuild my 2 Litre diesel engine: like yourself I was a bit worried
about holes in the block though. Once we got the wet liners back in
place we filled the block with water to make sure all the seals were
doing their jobs: this was one occasion when I was glad that water
levels had not dropped after 24 hours!!
I am happy to say that the crankshaft is back in its home, the bearing
caps have been torqued up, new tappet guides etc fitted and by some
arcane process my Uncle has set the timing: I have a vague hope that I
might be able to drive the reassembled S1 before Christmas...It has only
taken me 4 years to get this far and I have a '49 80", 2 86"s and a S3
to sort out next - not necessarily in that order! At my current rate I
will be in my mid 40s by the time I get them all restored.
