direction of Archive::Builder, which I wrote a few years ago for use im 
exactly this type of application (I use it in a commercial product).

It if fits what you are looking for, it would also give the ability for 
ttree to dump the built file trees out to zip files and the like without 
touching the filesystem, although I'm not sure how in-demand such 
features would be.
