It's a feature, although I'm not convinced it's a particularly useful
feature. (I'm open to suggestions for de-featuring it in TT3, or at least
making it configurable).
From Template::Manual::Variables:
Any key in a hash which starts with a '_' or '.' character will be con-
sidered private and cannot be evaluated or updated from within a tem-
plate. The undefined value will be returned for any such variable
accessed which the Template Toolkit will silently ignore (unless the
DEBUG option is enabled).
