I think numeric/named entities both work no matter what character set you are using.

BTW: I really only offered that suggestion as a possible quick fix that MIGHT work, so that Steve might be able to continue working while waiting for responses. Steve has since responded to me and let me know that it didn't work for him. I think the response wasn't CC'd to the list so here it is:
