I have fitted a 'Series 2' crossmember into a Series 1 - you may have to
drill holes to accept the earlier pattern 'rubber bobbin' gearbox mounts, as
the later crossmember has 'lugs' to accept a different mounting. One of
these holes is quite large as you have to be able to pass a socket through
to get to the nut above - I got a metalwork shop to drill it. Ironically,
the original (built November 56) crossmember HAD the lugs (which were
unused) as well as the necessary holes.
I intended to write a 'Home Workshop' article for LRe, but the standard of
my welding was so deplorable that I didn't dare show anyone the photographs!
Fair dos - it was the first time I'd used a MIG welder (bought specially to
do the job) and I found out later that it was faulty. This, of course,
implies that my MIG welding is now perfect!
