Thanks Tom and Thomas for the observations/suggestions.  I'd been planning
to take the NATO hitch to the plant hire firm anyway.

And glad I did - observation of the stock in their yard showed that there is
no standard size ring hitch.  The one on the generator was about 50mm
internal diameter, but there were ones even smaller... and the NATO hook
wouldn't go through the ring of any of them.

A call past the friendly local trailer supplies shop on the way home was
interesting.  The guy was obviously familiar with NATO hitches, which he
says need a 75mm ring.  He could sell me a suitable top-quality jaw + pin
hitch for UKP 60, or a cheapo one for UKP 30.  As I only need it for a total
of 35 towing miles, I declined!  My next plan of action is to visit all my
farming neighbours to see if anyone has a spare jaw hiding in a junk box
somewhere.

Incidentally, the guy in the plant hire office was fascinated by the NATO
hitch, which he'd never seen before.  He came out with me to the generator
to see how it worked.  When it wouldn't, he looked at the 50mm ball on the
back of the RR and said "But wouldn't the ring on the generator fit over
that?".  I said that, yes it would... but how the blue blazes would we stop
it jumping off at speed?  Honestly, you can't get the staff, can you!
