Randall,
The vehicle was built as positive earth (ground). There is no reason why it
should not be converted to negative earth. If converted a normal alternator
will work fine. It may be worth changing the coil but everything else will
work normally.
However there is a problem with the fan belt. The early wide fan belt
vehicles are not easy to convert because you cannot get a small alternator
pulley which takes the wide belt. The smaller pulley makes the alternator
run faster which is part of why it is more efficient. If you could make or
get a small diameter wide pulley the belt would probably not run well and
this could cause problems. I have not seen this done.
Also I suspect, but am not sure, that the bigger diameter alternator would
not physically fit with the standard pulley and standard belt. If it did fit
the advantages would be limited because it would not be running fast enough.
The million dollar question therefore is does you vehicle have an early
engine with the wider belt or a later replacement engine with a "normal"
width one?
Nick.

I am new here on vintage electrical systems. I have not got my 50 LR home
yet. Is the 1950 LR a positive or negative ground? Can you still hook up a
one-wire alternator instead of the generator on it if it is a positive
ground?
