George,

You are right about Rover making this up as they went along. My 80
originally had no level plug there and at a later date (as instructed by
Rover) a 1/4 BSF bolt was tapped in.

(Don't know where the swarf went but it was at least one major rebuild ago)!

Nick.

Hi Allan, Martin and Mark,

I think Mark Love is right about the size as my level plug is hex-headed
and I use a 14mm socket to remove it (the corners are rounded so the
correct socket size is a bit fuzzy) -- 3/8 BSP would have a major diameter
larger than my distance across flats. It sounds like Rover was making
this feature up as they went along.

As to the desirability of a dipstick, it saves crawling under and, if it
were long enough to bend over near the master cylinder reservoir (say, if
I used a bit of old speedo cable for the dipstick) I would only have to
unscrew the 12 screws retaining the center stowage box (no access under
the seat in a Minerva) when I really needed to do so, rather than the
'once weekly' I do now.

Thanks.
