I should add a note.

Lifting the front end by extended spring shackles without extending the
opposite hanger will change your steering geometry by rotating from the
vertical, the position the tyre contacts the road.  There is a good
engineering argument that if you don't reposition both ends of the spring to
the same height, you should fit an appropriate wedge between the axle and
spring to compensate for the changed geometry.

Australian Army 109" Land Rovers during the Vietnam War era had two spring
heights.  The first position was the standard Land Rover height for general
duties and a second for increased ground clearance and therefore more
manoeuvrability.  There were 3 holes in the shackle plates and two in the
hanger at the front end of all 4 springs.  You had to raise or lower both
ends at the same time.  When in the extended position there was a spacer
bolted into the middle holes to provide lateral stability and prevent
bending of the plates in extreme situations.   The general situation was
that the vehicles remained in the extended position throughout their service
life.

On the rear the answer is Yes - standard Series IIa/III Land-Rover spring
shackle plates fit the narrow springs of the early series 1 models.  They
will lift the vehicle about 5/8", you will have to visit your local
engineering supplier to get 9/16" UNF bolts for the correct length because
your original shackle bolts are stepped to 1/2" BSF and the later models
bolts will be too long.

The geometry on the universal joints will work OK but you should consider
longer shock absorbers and lengthened check straps (if you still have them
fitted) because you will reduce the extend travel.

I have the later plates on my 1952 front and rear, but my front springs are
the wide (in fact I have new series III springs on the front) and have
standard series III front shackle plates and bolts.

On the front of a 1948-1950 - I'm not sure,  you would have to use the
standard series III rear plates.  They fit on the rear 1 3/4" springs so
there should be no reason why they won't work for 1 3/4" springs on the
front.

Do any of the shackles from the later series land rovers fit the bolts
used by the narrow-leaf 80" land rovers?

I'm looking to fit longer shackles to my suspension system, and I'm
trying to find something that fits....
