Yes, you wonder how & why these differences arose; bonnet = hood, boot  = 
trunk, spanner = wrench, sill = rocker (now that one is  weird !) etc.  But 
apparently America drives on the right (post  independence) just out of cussedness 
because Brits drove on the left !
