Taking great pleasure in belaboring the point, if you want to whip an ox
or hit someone with a sword or mace, you would prefer them to be opposite
to your stronger are, so you could get a better swing. Two right-handed
men on horseback intent on having a sword or mace fight would follow the
American rule, as this would allow each best use of the stronger arm. If
they did not want to fight, then passing each other in the English manner
would make each less able to attack the other. Now the, ox team and
Conestoga wagon principle is even clearer, as you would have two
multi-ton cargo wagons, pulled by somewhat unmanageable oxen, offering
the driver an opportunity to get gored, crushed and ground into the mud,
were they to pass in the English fashion.
