Hi Anthony,

I was just about to head home so I may have more ideas tomorrow, but the
overdrive output gear replaces the transfer case drive gear and there is
no reason to believe that the wear patterns on either of these bears any
resemblance to a new gear or, more importantly, to each other. As they
'wear in' I would expect that noise to moderate. Unfortunately, you
should hear it in either overdrive ratio, so you seem to be hearing
something else. Is it possible your Fairey was assembled from bits of two
or more boxes?

Shimming a helical gear to shift the wear patterns might change the
amplitude of noise but not the frequency. Shimming a helical gear to
reduce the lash will often reduce 'whine'; in this case it could be the
overdrive laygear (cluster) since that is only loaded in overdrive.

Under the best of circumstances, though, you've added more lash to the
system -- expect some whine on decell.

Hope that helps.
