If the slip joint for the drive shaft is near the transmission, can you part
the driveshaft to swing the yoke and get more access to get a socket over
the nut? If so, mark the alignment of the pieces for re-assembly, although
there should be faint arrows stamped in the pieces for alignment.

I agree a ring spanner is more likely to work than a socketon the propshaft
bolts. I think I used a 1/4 WW but its cold dark and wet outside at the
moment and I dont fancy crawling about under the Landrover to check.
However, if the bolts have been replaced at some time they might be 5/8 AF
so you may have to establish the spanner size first.  Having done that I
also found that an open ender was also usefull but that the secret of
undoing them is a bit at a time and also turning the prop shaft and angling
it to give maximum exposre to the nut.
If you can remove the propshaft and still want to strip the brake (why not
now you are down there) you could try using a hub puller. I used to slack
and whak but discovered that a hub puller will fit neatly over the edge of
the drum and enable the drum to be moved out consistently around its
circumference which is the problem with the whaking technique as it shifts
the drum out of alignment and makes it jam against the brakeshoe even if it
is slackened off.
