Hi Ben,

Without knowing enough about the API GL-1 spec to offer more than an
observation, I'd assume that the bronze gears referred to are worms as
that's about the only place they're still seen.  Worm drives have
unusually high friction between the elements and consequently place
unusual demands on lubricants, beyond even hypoid gearsets.  If that is
so, I wonder what advantage GL-1 has over GL-4 or GL-5 MT-1 for our Landys
outside the winch drives.

I'm interested in anything you've discovered, however.
