Thanks for the info Ulrico, I'm going to look into the cost of shipping =
one to Canada. If I can do it for around $200 Canadian then it'll be =
cheaper than trying to patch up the old one.

  Hi Steve,

I would not have pursued the thought hadn't I spoken to Craddocks some =
days before. Under their reference number JC157 they offer a rear cross =
member for Series I from 1948 till 1957. I have automatically assumed =
that this would suit my 1953 vehicle. Am I mistaken here?

In "The Legend" I read about a guy called Geoff who produces 80 inch =
chassis parts. So, to my understanding there seem to be people around =
who produce these parts. however, these parts come without extensions, =
hence the question. I have already rebuild a SIIA from scratch and have =
used a rear cross member with extensions. It fitted so so and I had to =
cut away one side from one extension and move it by about 5 mm.

I know the Haynes manual, it has been my favourite bedtime lecture for =
months, very much to my wife's regret though... I made a jig from angle =
iron and it worked quite well.

  Ulrico

  Hello Ulrico

From the looks of your X-member I would try and fix it before =
considering replacement! I'm not to sure if you can even buy a new =
series I replacement X-member, can you???? If so let me know and I'll =
order one for my self.

If you do go the replacement rout it's the same as doing a Series II, =
you cut straight through the chassis rail as close to the X-member as =
you can then slide the new extended X-member over the old chassis rail =
and weld in place. You may want to make a simple frame jig before you =
remove the old bumper to insure a good fit. It's a good investment to =
get the Haynes Restoration manual for Land Rover series I, II & III it =
has several chapters devoted to Chassis repair and Rear crossmember =
replacement. I'm always referring to it, it's an invaluable tool.
