A friend and I once got a wartime American truck running on the petrol that 
was in the tank.  It was running very rough, and we cleaned all the fuel 
lines, changed oil, new plugs/points/condensor/leads etc etc and tuned it to 
no avail.  Eventually we tried running it from a jerry can of fresh fuel and 
it started and ran perfect straightaway - it turned out the petrol in the 
tank was at least 10 years old!!
