I am pretty sure the basic timing is correct. However I will follow your
advice because  I did not verify that the piston was at TDC on compression
stroke. I will just change the HT wiring, connecting number 1 to number 4
and  2 to 3.

From what you say it sounds like you have a spark, but it is way out of
timing.  It is possible that the distributor timing may be exactly 180
degrees out.
If you are not absolutely sure the timing is exactly correct, may I suggest
you free off the distributor clamp, lift the whole distributor up about 5 mm
and then rotating the rotor arm 180 degrees, push the distributor back down,
clamp it up and try again.  This only takes a few minutes to do.
 
In theory this should not be possible to do, but I have been able to do this
with worn distributors.
