Back in 2001, I had an 80 with no paperwork, so this is what I did:
An insurance company should be able to cover you, on the chassis number,
noting that the insurance is not actually valid without a current MOT or
tax disk
The vehicle can also be MOT'd on it's chassis number. A vehicle without
a current MOT or tax disk may travel on the hightway *if it's going
directly to, or from, an appointment for an MOT or vehicle inspection*.
After getting an MOT against the chassis number, I could get an
appointment with the local Vehicle Licencing Office, and apply for a V5,
a number plate, and a tax disk. Again, an appointment, so I can happily
drive on the road.
The Licencing people wanted 4 things:
Proof of age of the vehicle
One British Heritage Certificate - check, OK
Valid MOT certificate for the vehicle
As done by Ideal - check, OK
Valid Insurance - Thank you NFU.. check, OK
A V55/5 form
Mine was an out-of-date form, but I filled in a new one..
Check, OK
Top man Liam (the guy at the Edinburgh place): He photocopied the MOT &
Heritage Certificate. He also copied my ARC logbook form, and the photos
of the origional wreck - and then issued me with the original
numberplate SY 9255!
It may be non-transferable, but it *is* mine!
Warning: the offices are pretty busy, as all the dealers and garages
have to use them. I was there for almost 2 hours....
