I agree with Ulrico. 

My ex-107" SW was fitted with a 2.25 petrol engine and due to freezing (no
antifreeze coolant in the cooling system, just water) the block was cracked.
As I noticed the mishap, I contacted some local welding specialists who
confirmed that the block can be welded (with special methodology as
described by Ulrico). However, it became evident that the crack was not only
on the surface of the block but the oil and water channels inside the block
had cracks too, so, I bought an used 2.25 liter engine instead.

However, if by "beyond repair" you mean something more than just a surface
crack on the block, things can be a bit more complicated.
