SER1 Steering Box Clamp

At the Petersham Rally, I remember some owners had put a clamp around
the top of the steering box.  I believe it was to prevent cracking of the case?
Could someone please clarify this a bit?  The reason, the type of clamp,
whether it's just on the top of the steering box or also to some supporting
structure......  Or give directions to an archive on the subject.
