Your psychic diagnosis was spot on - the cush drive sleeve was indeed =
knackered.  In fact I'm amazed that it managed to start successfully as =
often as it did given the state of it.

A quick clean up of the commutator and the rest of it is fine. A quick =
question (anyone?)  - there seem to be different schools of thought on =
lubricating the bendix: grease graphite or oil.  Which does the team =
recommend?    When removed it was oily with no real build up of dirt on =
it (apart from shreds of rubber).
