Starter brushes will depend on which starter model you have. I had a Lucas
M418G starter on my '57 2 litre and rebuilt it and installed it on my late
2.25 retrofit. I assume that the late series 1 starter was the same as
early series 2. I do know that the later series 2 Lucas GEU419 starter does
not share the same brushes as the M418G.
I do not know how this may apply to earlier series 1 starters. The Lucas
model number should be stamped quite clearly onto the case of the starter
itself. The model number will be the best help in tracking down brush
replacements. I found that the solderings needed a strong and minute source
of heat to remove them quickly to avoid damaging the windings and
insulation. I found a miniature torch worked well when used with great care
for desoldering and installation of new brushes.

Hope this can be of help,
