G'Day George,
Interesting comments about the leaks. Wonder what Minerva did to
make them so leaky? Both my 1950 and '53 80" are not bad, replaced the
rubber under the windscreen and the windscreen vent (most here had the
optional opening vent), replaced all of the door and tailgate rubbers,
and with the hood rear flap down and fastened, they are quite
waterproof. Put rubber plugs in the holes in the rear body wheel
arches to stop the spray coming in through them (holes are for the
optional rear seats) and the only leak of any consequence now is from
the big rubber grommet arout the steering box (there are of course very
minor leaks through the floor).
Stands to reason that Rover made some sort of an effort in that
regard as the UK has a reputation for raining quite a bit.
The '48 is another story, the fixed panel below the winscreen is not
a brilliant fit and there were no seals fitted on the doors and
tailgate. The hood is as leak proof as the later ones though even though
it is a little different in its design.
Interesting feature of my '53 is that the blanking plate in the
bulkhead for the governor hand throttle quadrant is missing (the vehicle
had a governor fitted at one stage) and the hole is quite a good heat
source (an anoying heat source for the other half of the year actually).
Cheers, enjoy the trip,
Allan
