Ed Atherton asked <<Are the tappets always noisy on these?>> and Ian
Stuart replied << My engine is quiet - so quiet that I have to listen
for the exhaust>>

Wow - treasure that one, Stuart! Before we took Fido (SXF870) to her
first rally at Billing, I was worried about the obvious terminal state
of the valve gear/main bearings. I replaced the camshaft and adjusted
everything minutely, then dropped the sump and checked the crankshaft -
nothing obviously wrong. We drove to Billing.

There in the Series 1 Parade we found over a hundred 2-litre engines,
all making the same distinctive clatter as Fido. Just put it down to
'character', Ed!

Incidentally, it took about 5 years before I got the sump oil-tight
again.
