    G'Day Ed,
    The tappets, if set correctly should be relatively quiet. The main 
source of valve train noise in the inlet over exhaust Rover engines is 
from worn rocker shafts. Only way to cure that is to replace the shafts 
if they are worn. Before you undertake such drastic measures, check the 
tappet clearances.
