For preparation for galvanizing a chassis, I'd soak it in a degreaser, sandblast 
it, then steamclean it, repair it, then steamclean it again.

IIRC< part of the galv'ing process is to drop it in a weak acid bath, which 
should theortecially clean it up perfectly, but the more help you can give the 
process the better....
