I have the Crane Allison electronic ignition systems in both my '66 SIIA (+ earth) and '74 SIII (- earth) for 3 years and > 5 years, respectively. The spark is optically triggered by a lamp and shutter assembly inside the dizzy under the rotor, with an external amplifier and requires a Lucas sport coil for a hotter spark.
I have had flawless service from these systems. I do perform regular tune-ups, replacing dizzy cap and rotor, and lubricate the dizzy shaft. 

Only drawbacks are the cost of the initial purchase ($125 US), the need to mount the amplifier in a place where it will not get wet or too warm (summers can get up to 117 F a week at a time where I live, >120F in the deserts).

Pluses are slight improvement in mileage, better idle and running, very little need to adjust timing ever.
