SER1 Dynamo (generator) question

Hi all,

The dynamo (generator) on my Series 2 petrol has packed up, and the only spare I have is from a 2 litre Diesel. As a short term arrangement, would it make any difference fitting the diesel dynamo - which presumably is designed to charge the twin 6 volt batteries, as opposed to a lower powered 12 volt battery. I just need to know if it will cause any damage really please?
