From the pictures of the LR's dumb irons, it is definitely an 86" and
given that the engine has a rebuild plate on it, I would surmise that
the original petrol engine died and was replaced with the diesel.  The
2L diesel will fit in the 86" chassis but you have to remove the
radiator cowl to do this.

The prototype diesels appeared in 1956; I cannot recall whether Land
Rover used 86"s as test mules for the engine but I suspect they did.  It
is possible that this one could have been a test mule but I think it
more likely that someone took the decision to change to diesel in the
late 50's/very early sixties.  Even if it could be confirmed that this
was used as a test mule for the 2L diesel engine, it would not be the
'original' engine since these were rebuilt on a service exchange basis.
