HI Everyone,
As discussed, the 2.0/2/6 petrol share the same bolt pattern and are unique.
The 2.0 diesel, 2.25 diesel/petrol, 2.5 both versions and 200TDI share the
same pattern. The 300TDI can be used, I think you have to remove one stud, or
some other minor mod. Now, since the S1's all had a mechanical clutch
actuation, and the S11/S11a and up all have hydraulic, you will need either the
bellhousing for 2.0 diesel or early S11. These have a hole in both sides of the bell
housing where the mechanical cross shaft can connect. This is only an issue
of LHD. If RHD, then this is not an issue, I believe. This applies to
86/88/107/109.
As discussed, if going into 80", it is more complicated with the starter
clearance, and when 2.25 and above going into 86", then the fan won't clear the
rad so this is another issue. I never saw the alleged axle clearance problem.
My personal favorite S1 is the 88", still very S1, but all the powertrain
options work. If you can find a good used 88 that had a 2.0 diesel power, it
likely already has been repowered or can be easily.
