I work with Solaris machines a lot, and one thing I've learned is to take
Sun's cc completely out of my path and install gnu gcc (sunfreeware.com is a
good source for gcc binaries). Tons of open-source stuff breaks (including
Perl modules) with Sun's compiler, particularly on older Solaris (< 9)
versions, so I suspect this is your problem.
