But wouldn't accessing DB server functions bypass CDBI?  It's doable
with the correct set_sql statement, but does that mean it's a good idea?

In this case I'm not too worried, as we don't need micro-second accuracy
and all of the machines are kept in relative sync via ntp, I'm just
trying to figure out what way makes the most sense for long-term
viability.
