I did just as Phil suggested a number of years ago on Fido (SXF870), running
a 7-core trailer cable from the engine bay back to the rear of the car to
carry all the lighting supplies for the rear and trailer lights.  For the
final terminal box I found an excellent unit in a commercial vehicle
electrical agents - a hard plastic box about 5"x3" (125mmx75mm) with 4 holes
with waterproofing grommets and a lid secured with a central screw knob and
a waterproof gasket.  Inside were a number of screw terminals to link the
cables from the 7-core to their respective local ends.  I think the box was
originally designed to distribute lighting at the rear of truck or trailer
chassis, so it's well waterproofed for those who have soft tops, or want to
mount them out of sight underneath somewhere.

It's made by Durite (Gordon Equipments Ltd, Dovercourt, Essex), and their
website is www.durite.co.uk.  Unfortunately it isn't a 'catalogue', so I
can't find the actual unit, and can't see a serial number with it in situ in
Fido - but it's served me well for 15-20 years.  Durite also do 'Rubbolite'
rear-light clusters (again for commercial vehicles).  I must see if they can
provide something for our trailer a bit more electrically robust than the
cheapo things you get in the average accessory store.
