Hi Steve,
I show the pinion oilseal to be Rover #217507, equivalent to Chicago
Rawhide #17557. This is a single lip design (one garter spring) which
make sense unless wading is a routine part of your duty cycle as the
lubricant is only on the spring side. The problem with double lip seals
like you describe is that in the absence of lube on both sides the dry
side wears rapidly into the yoke and ultimately forms a dirt catcher. I
suspect your vendor thinks it's a superior design; I'm not so sure (I'm
assuming the dimensions are correct).
