Absolutely correct - unfortunately (or fortunately) the distance to the
restaurants you mention are done when there is no other cars on the road at
the maximum permissible speed without traffic lights.

One interesting note about signs were the signs advertising a roadhouse in
the 1970's on the old road to Ayres Rock in Central Australia.  The road was
150 miles of corrugated gravel, about 90 miles along was this roadhouse Mt
Ebenezer Station.  About 30 mile before it was a sign made out of a 44
gallon drum lid, all it said was "cold drinks".  About 10 mile later was
another similar sign "ice cream", then subsequently "cold beer". By the time
you came to the roadhouse you were so thirsty you could do nothing other
than stop and buy the cold drinks, ice cream and beer.  It has to be some of
the most effective advertising ever!

Having also been lucky enough to visit Oz a couple of years ago, I
thought you calculated travelling not in distances, but in time? I
remember seeinig signs on the roadside informing me that a McDonalds
restaurant (their 'term' not mine) was in 45 minutes, and not 30 km's
(for example).
