    G'Day Riaan,
    You are correct in assuming that there is a 2x4 mode. With the 
transfer box in neutral (midway position) there should be no drive to 
either prop shaft. Forward position (high range) should be 2x4 and the 
rearward position is low range and 4x4 (no choice). It is possible that 
with transmission wind up the front drive select dog is not able to 
dissengage.
    Re the clutch, the most likely culprit is one of the little pins 
connecting the pedal shaft to the clutch throw out lever via the 
"squashed tube" coupling has either broken or dropped out. I would check 
that first as it does not entail removing the gearbox. Sorry for the 
description, no part numbers here with me.
