Brian,

The Speedo needle is connected to an aluminium disk that is dragged round by
a rotating magnet assembly against a spiral spring. Either the drive is
“winding up” so the rotation of the magnet is not steady or the needle
assembly is sticking. 

Two likely possibilities 

One is that there is a problem with the drive cable – Is it damaged, bent
too sharply or has the lubricant got stiff or dried out?

Otherwise the Speedo needle is not free to rotate properly – dirty bearings
or lubrication problems within the Speedo – this is a job for a specialist.

maybe this has been covered b4 but my 80" has an erratic Speedo ie it
indicates between 20 & 40 mph and never stays in one place except when the
vehicle stops
