Brian
I have a GPS that can be erratic. The Speedo and the Odometer are two =
separate functions in the one gauge. The Odometer works on the number =
of rotations of the drive cable while the speedometer works on the rate =
of the rotation of the drive cable. =20
If the odometer is correct and the speedo moves you don't have a broken =
drive cable.
The first thing to investigate is if the inner is lubricated or has dirt =
or contamination. This will prevent the inner drive rotating smoothly. =
The solution is to remove the drive cable (inner and outer) and clean =
them.=20
Inspect the inner cable for kinks which can cause the cable to pulse and =
make an erratic speedo. Remove/reduce any kinks or replace the inner. =
Lubricate the inner with a low viscosity grease along its entire length =
and refit the cable. Avoid any sharp bends in the route the cable takes.
If this doesn't fix the problem then your problem is inside the speedo =
itself. Poor spring tension or the magnets touching the drum. If this =
is your problem and you want to try to fix it yourself beware you can =
easily make the problem worse. Send it to a technician.
Cheers

Subject: SER1 erratic speedo
hi everyone
maybe this has been covered b4 but my 80" has an erratic speedo ie it =
indicates between 20 & 40 mph and never stays in one place except when =
the vehicle stops
although the oddometer records the miles ok
can you offer any advice as to what might be wrong and how to fix it =
please
is this quite common?
