Fido (SXF870) has had a wildly erratic speedo since 1974! Knowing (?)
it to be a symptom of an expiring drive cable, I waited for it to fail
before getting a replacement. Glad I did - it's yet to pack up. Think
of all the years-worth of money I've been saving!

Seriously - I can't find anything wrong with the drive or head, and if
the cable WERE on its way out, surely it would have gone by now? I've
often wondered if the gearbox end were at fault. Isn't the worm drive
just a slide fit over the end of a shaft? If so, any chance that it
could be slipping on the shaft? Maybe not, as that would result in the
mileage reading being 'short', and I've no evidence that it is.
