    G'Day Graham,
Presuming that your starter is the Lucas G76 type, it sounds to me
as if the rubber bonded cush drive in the Bendix has come unbonded. Its
construction is rather like the bushes for the road springs and it is
designed to drive the starter and to cushion the shock of the Bendix
engaging in the ring gear.
Lucas part number is 290081, and it is called "sleeve and rubber" in
the Lucas parts book.goodness knows where you will get one but I would
hazard a guess that they will be easier to come by in the UK than here.
The Lucas parts book is available in the garage documents section if
you wish to look at the parts. Use the early parts book. The 1957 one
reproduced there also is not applicable to the early type starters.
I have had a couple of these fail on me, I assume that the rubber is
old and getting brittle. The rubber in the sleeve takes the full driving
force of the starter and not infrequently, when it fails it will drive
intermittently or even initially and then slip. You description of the
symtom is exactly as I have experienced.
    Cheers
