Great - your VIN is in the correct sequence for having bulkhead lamps, which
you do in that the receptacles are there, so my guestimate (based on best
available evidence) of April or May 1951 was about 8 weeks to 10 weeks out
depending on how long it takes to build 236 LHD export vehicles. (If the
numbers are correct.) The man with a reasonable understanding of the
numbers of vehicles produced is Mike Bishop (Victoria not South Africa) so I
will leave that answer to him.

I know I have had problems with the VIN and the supposed count of vehicles.
My only answer is that they may have skipped numbers. I am told that the
CKD were exported without numbers stamped and then these were stamped by the
assembler. I know that my Annand and Thompson 1951 has very different fonts
in the numbers to my Grenville Motors 1950. It's only a guess but they may
have chosen not to build some vehicles and use the parts as spares. This
does not account for the export vehicles.

The UK members may have more information, however I believe that there were
multiple assembly lines for Land Rovers at that time. So they may have
allocated a block series of numbers to one production line and a later block
series to another line. When they ran out of parts or the production year
finished they simply jumped the remaining numbers and continued on with the
new series of VIN. Which would mean that there are holes in the VIN
sequences and hence less vehicles than the VIN represents.

Just a guess.

Cheers
Diana

P.S Note that I try to avoid the use of VIN with the word numbers appended
on - it's a bit like going to the ATM "machine" where you use your PIN
"n...."

But after all even my friends say I'm pedantic - it's a good thing that I
work in a pediatric hospital (well paediatric for peepl whose bin lernd
proppa)

Diana,

If we REALLY want to get pedantic my 80" does not have bulkhead lights,
but does have the receptacles and it is #16136629 with a 28 June 1951
birth date -- courtesy of John Riley at Solihull.

I also checked the SOG for VIN numbers. It states that there were only
6120 LHD export Land Rovers produced in 1951, yet mine is 16136629 and
as you state there were vehicles numbers up to at least 16136866. Is
there anyone who really knows the correct number?
