Thanks Tom,
I flew Phantoms in the 70's and then transitioned to F-111's out of RAF
Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire. It sounds like they ingested some birds
at low level which would have made the engines stall like that.
Tactical speeds were 420-480 knots at around 500' AGL so in an
emergency you only had seconds to make a decision and perhaps try and
wrestle a crippled ship out of a populated area. It is an unforgiving
business.
