A trick that is often missed is to thread a couple of long studs - (long
bolts with the heads cut off for preference) into the back of the engine, or
in our case the aluminium casting on the back of the engine, to provide
something to hang the gearbox off in approximately the right position. These
should not carry the whole weight of the box and should not be used to force
the engagement but are just an alignment tool in themselves.
Unless you have a transmission lifter with fine adjustment this is the
easiest way to roughly line everything up and makes engaging the splines and
bearing much easier. They act as a sort of pivot to help aligning the box
and also take some of the weight off the gearbox input shaft. When the box
is in position and on the normal studs the long studs can be removed and
replaced with the usual ones.
The Mark One Eyeball is good with a sloppy bronze bush but not so good when
the bearing in the middle of the flywheel is a sealed ball bearing and the
gearbox input shaft has to line up to fit exactly!

I cannot find an alignment tool for the clutch..
Is there another way to align the clutch without the tool?
