Ah yes - forgot to mention that bit! Ian is spot on. Luckily the
early SII swivel kits from Paddocks use the same studs as the series
one (at least mine did).
I noticed when replacing mine that the internal profile of the chrome
ball is the same as later series 1's (such as yours, Mark) but slightly
different to 80" swivels. This gets a mention in the 1948-58 series
one workshop manual (one of the few useful things in there!) In
practice however, I could not see how this could cause any problems and
so far it hasn't.
One other tip I have, if you have not done this before, is to note the
thickness of the shims you take out from the top and bottom. The kit
comes with a selection to replace them. Start by using the same
thickness as you have removed and setup according to the manual (you'll
need a spring balance to measure the forces). I found that with the
new parts I needed different shims (less) to achieve the correct setup,
but the steering feels so much better now!
The first time I did this I didn't bother to actually measure the
forces - just put back the same thickness of shims, was disappointed
that the steering felt wrong (a bit like the tracking was out - unequal
forces depending on where in the turn you were) - set it up properly
and it's much better.
