My understanding (derived from rebuilding axles) is thus:
All the swivels (the silver ball bit) are the same (from the '48 to '85)
The only difference between S1, SII & SIII swivel housings (the bit that
goes over the swivel) is the studs used to hold the arms in place: the
SIII ones are thicker.
Personally, I have SIII swivel housings, and SIII swivel arms on my
narrow-leaf 80" (it takes a bit of jiggery pokery to get right), and I'm
using roller bearings top and bottom (and no, I don't get huge wobble in
my steering, and no, I don't have a damper, and yes, I have gone over
70mph..)
