    Fact is Peter,
You might do 90+ in an 80" (usually the hood needs to be off and you
need a 1:20 down slope). A better result would be gained either out the
back door of a C130 or down a greased mine shaft. My Discovery will do
over 150kmh flat out but the law of the land and the laws of physics if
anything goes wrong, not to mention the fact that the engine will not
really like it for a long period of time, dictates that a more sedate
speed makes sense.
Remember that these vehicles were never built with the intention of
being highway burners (seem to recall that they were advertised as the
"farmers friend" at one point ) and that highway speeds and people's
expectations of reasonable highway speeds in the early 1950s were not
what they are today. Can't we just enjoy Series Is for what they are and
with an understanding of why and how they came about. There are plenty
of faster cars out there if that is what you crave.
    Cheers
