so far I identified two of the four bearing types needed. The differential
wheel bearing is readily available through the Land Rover sources. The
pinion bearing (gear side) is called *3490/3420/QCL7VQ492. I think this is a
good name for a bearing, short and easy to remember....
 
The load of letters describes all sorts of minor details, which are however
without any meaning for an application in a 80". What I learned from the
exercise is that imperial bearings do not follow a standardized
identification scheme which has been brought to life in 1975.
 
The other pinion bearing (flange end), which is the obsolete 219550, does
not figure in the SKF catalogue. The numbers engraved on cup and cone
however give indication to what it might be. I mailed all this to a bearing
supplier last night to see whether he can find something.
 
Your hint at the later series one parts book certainly kills the beast
regarding the rear wheel bearing. I agree with you that 270605 has probably
superseded the older part number 07296. The little thing is quite expensive,
Craddock charges 33 pounds each.
 
Regarding the use of the retaining collar, I have somehwere read in a manual
for a later vehicle that you should not reuse them but I do not really see
the reason why. A friend of mine is pressing the bearings off (he has access
to a press with a special fixture to take care of the difficult access
situation) and then I have a look at it.
 
Right now I am thinking of how to check correct position of the pinion.
Problem is that the cup of the pinion bearing (gear end) is also a press
fit. To put in the original shims, then to look at the marks on the gears
and then possibly to press the bearing out again is quite complicated.
Access for the press is difficult. Tapping it out is not the most suitable
thing to do with a new bearing. I will have to design some sort of a puller.
