There is a factory bracket which came out as a part fix for the same
problem on the early series 2. It is a stright bolt on job , just a
couple of 5/16", holes to drill in the firewall to make it fit the
later series 1
I have had one in my parts inventry for a long time just never got
around to fitting it, would not be hard to make.

Mark & Randy-
I find the exact same issue with my 5 Door. I was thinking of welding a
stiffener
at an angle from the front part of the bracket across to the back part
of the
bracket length wise. I haven' gotten to it yet, but thought that would
make it
stronger and stiffer.
I was on an extended trip to Baja and after a very rough portion of road
for 50-60
k, the steering got really vague. My brother and I found that bracket
had come
loose from the box and the bulkhead. I think we even lost a bolt.
after lock
tighting and sinching up everything, we were back to the regular flex.
It does
seem a weak link in the steering system. the added flex we all
experinence is a
bit of a problem.
Anybody else have similar problems and fixes?
